EXPLOSIVE REMNANTS OF WAR
EXPLOSIVE REMNANTS OF WAR
Enormous amounts of ammunition from WWII lie unexploded and leaking toxic chemicals in various Pacific countries, a danger to local people and to the environment. The explosive is sometimes ‘harvested’ to make homemade bombs which are then used to kill fish, with devastating results on local reefs
In its previous life with the New Zealand Navy, our ship was involved in several expeditions to collect and disarm these dangerous and polluting remains from the war.
Several NGOs are working to clean up this waste, (eg Norwegian Peoples Aid in Palau). and we have recently been approached by several entities about using her to do more of this work in various Pacific nations. We will continue scoping this project.
